Project Playground received lots of support at the annual 4th of July events in Juneau and Douglas! Kids, parents, and supporters marched in the parade, and volunteers sold food at the Douglas festivities, which contributed greatly to project fundraising. Thanks very much to the following businesses for for their generous donations to support the food cart at Sandy Beach: TK Mcquires, Coca Cola of Alaska, El Sombreo Restaurant, Food Services of America, and Heritage Coffee.

And excellent news came when the State of Alaska budget was signed this year: Project Playground has received a $75,000 grant to be put toward the purchase of materials, supplies, and playground design needs!

We are asking for suggestions for the playground name. The suggested names can be emailed to juneauplayground@gci.net. We will be asking kids in school for their suggestions as well. After there is a good number of possible names, we will take it to the elementary schools for a final vote.

Our donor list has also been updated, and the donor page now incorporates more information on ways to donate to Project Playground. Note that playground components can be purchased as a donation. The McBrien family, Sue Nielson, Alaska Glacier Seafoods, and Alaska Airlines have each contributed components so far; their names will be inscribed on or near the playground implement that they donated - a special thanks to them! Check out the list of playground components and the current donors here (PDF).* And a current list of individual and business/corporate donors who have purchased personalized fence pickets and made other donations can be viewed here.

And finally, the Children's Committee will be having a potluck BBQ at Twin Lakes on Tuesday, May 23rd at 5:30. They will be marking the footprint of the playground to see how big it really will be! To participate, please contact April Gilbert at aprilsilk@hotmail.com.

Click to see larger viewWe enjoyed meeting people, and accepted many new donations in the form of personalized pickets for a fence that will eventually be incorporated into the playground. Thanks to everyone, and thanks very much to the Nugget Mall for donating space for our table at the fair.

Look for the model at public events in the future! To view a larger photo of the model, click the thumbnail on the left.
